Before you laugh at me for owning a budget device think one moment. It's cheaper to fix than the galaxy s2 by a huge difference
HUGE UPDATE - A Root has been found and works well, but does have some bugs! How to post is linked here!
But i do admit it's a sluggish thing due to a slow processor and it's hampered by it's small internal memory (256mb ram) But with a few tweaks we can make it better WITHOUT ROOTING and for free. (note: Thanks to the developers who made these free applications - Please consider buying the full versions over the free variants I will be once I can get a play store gift card -
************** UPDATE *****************
to help speed other bits up go to settings, Applications. Manage Applications. go through lots of preinstalled apps, remove what you won't use and what you will tap the app and move to SD card
this will speed the phone up a bit. use the other tips to make it work fantastically
*****************************************
The default launcher that comes with the phone is a memory hog. Alcatel Please make a vanilla rom without the bloat! But we can change this with Holo Launcher.
Holo Launcher replaces the default launcher on any device with a low memory consumption launcher made to look like Android Ice cream Sandwich. This makes a huge difference with performance.
Now the processor. It's a 650mhz Mediatek CPU with PowerVGR graphics. but it's slow at default. We can overclock it safely to 806mhz for free using the MTK CPU Control test Just make sure you apply the mod and set to apply on boot. I've done benchtests and it's increase in speed is shown. It's far from a placebo tool. The processor still shows 650 in any settings but the benchmarks show it works.
Memory optimisation. Use Memory Cleaner and Advanced task killer
Memory cleaner is a bit placebo but in tests it does a small bit of good combined with Advanced task killer.
Use these freeware tools to make your Phone fun faster than it has before.
Now for Social media.
If you want to run Facebook Give up. it's too slow for anyone's liking on the phone in it's huge 30mb footprint. (10-15mb minimum ram use too)
I suggest Fast for facebook it's basic but works well. But as it's in beta they are improving the tool every few weeks. It's a lot more fiddly than facebook on the first look. But it works well enough.
If that's too slow for you look for Opera Mobile and use the basic mobile facebook and twitter
For twitter. use the official app. it works ok but slow at times.
Instagram users it'll throw a wobbler despite installing.(unless they listened to my email) install molome it's just as good and can send pics to instagram too!
One more tip is the 3g access is slow, it's the limitation of the device itself.
This is a quick post and more will be added over time (i just realised i can get a new phone already. but will stay with this one as i like it. quirks and all)
Paul
Thanks Paul!
ReplyDeleteHad a really slow Alcatel one touch 903. Using Holo Launcher + MTK CPU Control test sorted all my problems!
Oh god what a great difference with just installing the Holo Launcher, i mean is amazingly fast now, haven't try the MTK CPU but i will, unfortunately i can't delete the preinstalled apps, or install apps on the SD, i can't choose the installing location, i've tried updating the alcatel software, which i know it used to fix this (on version 2,7) but now using the version 2.8 of the updater it seems they removed this feature, do you know any workaround for this?
ReplyDeleteBtw i just found this - http://www.oneclickroot.com/phone/alcatel-ot-903/ but a few people claim that they couldn't root this guy, any help will be appreciated.
Sadly Root seems impossible on the device OCR is good for many devices but the MTK chipset is the issue. (even though the clone phones with mediatek chips seem to root ok)
DeleteHi, doesn't this method works?
Deletehttp://www.oneclickroot.com/phone/alcatel-ot-903/
Sadly not. Many root tools fail. It seems Mediatek made it near impossible to root. whereas the cheap chinese dual sim clone phones come pre rooted
DeleteHi can i ask a question?if i want to use this phone as a modem and get 3g internet how fast i can download and how the phone will be working through 12 hours?thank you..
ReplyDeleteit has tethering options on gingerbread. The speeds depend on the device. I found it can be sluggish in 3g and Edge. but that could have been network issues with Vodafone.
DeleteOne speedtest I tried in another part of town i got 3mb down and 1mb up. if that helps
Thanks for this article. Great advice and works well.
ReplyDeleteGlad to be of service. I'll be experementing with root soon too!
DeleteHi, do you have some new information about rooting this phone?
DeleteAss soon as a root that works comes up please email me as it is frustrating me, my alcatel ot 903 is unlocked but was and still is origionally a three network phone, is this a problem? Thanks,.. D

when i download and install "MTK CPU-Control test" my 903D say "insufficient storage available" :'(
ReplyDeleteIf you go into settings and applications. you should be able to move some applications into the SDcard, this should help you. failing that try rooting the device and removing things you don't need first. the tutorial is linked above.
DeleteHi . Sir can you please share the systemui.odex of the device ? I accidentally deleted it . please sharte
ReplyDeleteHi, sadly my ot903 died just after New Years, if I can fix it I'll see if I can help but for now your only option is to use the ot software update suite. It'll unroot the device but it'll work perfectly again, then you can reroot again and carry out backups.

Thanks . I used the one touch upgrade. It formats my phone and I reroot it again :) By the way sir, is there any custom roms for this phone ?
DeleteSadly there are no custom roms that I know of. There are for other similarly specced phones but would not risk trying them :)
DeleteSo sad :( I think I'll go on modding the stock apps. I successfully deodexed the sytem apps .
